Increase Open Rates In Your Emails

Open mail icon. Emails after you increase open rates.

…all it takes is one simple trick. If you want to increase open rates in your email marketing, then pay close attention to what I just did with this article.

A simple trick that I have seen used incredibly well by some (and horribly by others) to increase open rates is to just make the subject line a little more enticing.

This article will be a little bit different than some of the others I have done in the past. This is the point in the article where I would typically wrap up the intro and give a brief explanation of what to expect for the following sections. However, I’ve already given you the secret, the tip, the trick…

Why you want to increase open rates

The world of email marketing is constantly shifting and changing…

For example, open rates are a fickle creature since Apple decided to change how/if emails can be tracked. Now, anyone who uses an Apple device doesn’t reveal if you have opened an email or not.

In all honest, this is a good thing. Sure, it makes my life harder, but privacy is important and valuable.

So…

…why should you care about whether or not you can increase open rates at all?

It’s still valuable information.

Even though the numbers are skewed now, knowing whether or not people are even opening your emails is still helpful to knowing if you are on the right track or not.

And subject lines and the “from” line are the two most important factors that affect open rates.

How to write better subject lines

Listen, I can’t help you on the From Line. You have to build trust and authority in your own way before that becomes important.

However, having an enticing (but honest) subject line is critical.

I want you to think back to all the emails you saw today. How many of them did you click and open? How many did you delete almost immediately?

Now WHY did you open some of them?

I am willing to bet a good portion of the ones you did open had subject lines that piqued your interest.

This is exactly why subject lines can make or break your open rates for your emails. So if you want to increase open rates, you need to practice your subject lines.

Go back to the beginning of this post

Take a look at the article title and the first line of text.

It’s one thought split up into a subject line and the opening paragraph of this article. The same practice can be done for email marketing.

To increase open rates, just make your subject line and preheader text flow together. Make the subject line an intriguing piece of information that is completed by the preheader. Sure, most of the time they will see this in their inbox and the mystery is gone…

…but it has been shown to increase open rates anyway.

People tend to open emails even if the twist was revealed right away. They will open because, if that was clever, then the rest of the email is probably enjoyable and quality content, too.

That’s all there is to it

Honestly, there is no great magic here aside from just practicing writing great subject lines and preheader text and making lots of drafts along the way.

I’ve had a lot of practice with this and I still have tons of room for improvement. I’m no master, though I am better than most (in my humble-but-not-so-humble opinion). So hire me if you need help or just shoot me a question.

And, heck, I have a lot of other articles that I have written that tackle topics like email marketing and writing catchy content. So check all that out, too.

Until next time, my friend, know that I appreciate you!
