How to Write Better Content in 1 Step

Published by Dylan Scott Miller on

The easiest way to write better content is…? A question I have wrestled with many times over these past two years.

If you want to write better content, then you could invest in courses, study from some of the best copywriters of all time, tackle some videos and playlists on the University of YouTube…

But, like it or not, there is one other way you could create improved posts and articles: by writing drafts. Lots of ‘em.

Let’s talk about why this helps and how to write better content through writing more drafts as an integral part of your content engine.

Why more drafts will help you write better content

If you want to write better content, then you are going to need to make sure that each piece you write is the best it can be.

Yes, sometimes this isn’t doable because of a time crunch or whatever…

…but if you want your post or article to be helpful and a worthwhile investment of both your time and the time of your readers, then it needs to be top tier work!

If you are a smaller team, then this doesn’t mean you need to go through 12 drafts before hitting publish.

However, what it does mean is that you can rewrite a headline in 10 different ways and then pick the best out of the 10. It does mean you can write 10 variations of intro paragraphs and then select the one that grabs the most attention. It does mean you can write 10 different calls-to-action and see which persuades you to act a little bit more.

For bigger teams, maybe to write better content it mean rewriting the same post or article through several different iterations to get the best one.

The point is, doing the best you can with the time and resources you have on-hand.

But why????

Typically, the human brain continues to work on problems in the background. So working on one thing will allow your brain to mull over some different options in the background.

This is the same reason why your favorite song is your favorite song. It was written, played, and recorded hundreds of times before becoming your favorite song. Before that, though, the artist probably thought about that song for days and weeks before it became the version you know and love.

The same is true for great articles and posts.

It takes time, care, and patience to write better content.

Some practical tips for writing multiple drafts

How do you make the transition to writing multiple drafts without totally clogging up your content engine, though?

It’s a fair question.

Here are just a few tips to help you write those drafts quickly and efficiently so you can write better content consistently:

  • Remember that there is no such thing as a bad idea
  • Try every combination of words, phrases, and sentences – you never know what might strike a perfect chord
  • Don’t spend too much time on drafts, spend more time on polishing the final draft
  • Tell yourself over and over again, “This will make someone’s life better” so that you don’t get caught up feeling drained

Go write better content!

At first, when I saw this advice floating around out there, I was so mad. I’m not great at writing drafts.

Then, once I thought it over…I must admit it has been a lot better for me to write a couple versions of something before going all in on just the first iteration.

You can write better content for your social posts, blogs, and emails – you just have to be willing to take the few extra minutes to hammer out some more drafts! It will make a world of difference for you!
